The importance of turbulent equilibrium for Reynolds-stress modeling

چکیده

Turbulence equilibrium state is analyzed for the modeled Reynolds-stress transport equation, assuming most general formulation of pressure–strain correlation. In a two-dimensional mean flow at high-Reynolds number, an algebraic equation system obtained, providing anisotropies as functions model coefficients. Conversely, equations provide calibration conditions coefficients to predict specified anisotropies. The predicted von-Kármán constant depends on and, hence, Identical can be obtained with different sets values invariants anisotropy tensor achieved, despite differing components. Numerical simulations Speziale–Sarkar–Gatski (SSG) model, using coefficients, confirm results theoretical analysis. They show that value Reynolds-shear stress determines skin friction boundary layer well spreading rate plane mixing layer. However, are required achieving good agreement experimental data both flows. Therefore, improvement turbulence models, set probably needs adapted local type flow. classification supposed suitable machine learning methods.

A Review of Reynolds Stress Models for Turbulent Shear Flows

A detailed review of recent developments in Reynolds stress modeling for incompressible turbulent shear ows is provided. The mathematical foundations of both two-equation models and full second-order closures are explored in depth. It is shown how these models can be systematically derived for two-dimensional mean turbulent ows that are close to equilibrium. A variety of examples are provided t...

Reynolds stress and the physics of turbulent momentum transport

The nature of the momentum transport processes responsible for the Reynolds shear stress is investigated using several ensembles of fluid particle paths obtained from a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. It is found that the Reynolds stress can be viewed as arising from two fundamentally different mechanisms. The more significant entails transport in the manner described by ...

A FEniCS-Based Programming Framework for Modeling Turbulent Flow by the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations

Finding an appropriate turbulence model for a given flow case usually calls for extensive experimentation with both models and numerical solution methods. This work presents the design and implementation of a flexible, programmable software framework for assisting with numerical experiments in computational turbulence. The framework targets Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes models, discretized by...

Computational Validation of New Reynolds Stress Closure for Nonequilibrium Effects in Turbulent Flows

The computational formulation of a new nonequilibrium Reynolds stress closure is presented along with preliminary validation results for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous turbulent flow problems of practical engineering importance. The new nonequilibrium closure, which has been rigorously derived elsewhere, replaces the classical Boussinesq hypothesis appearing in many current two-equation tur...
